When thoughts turn to Australia’s wine regions there are always the usual suspects, Barossa Valley, Margaret River and the like. What is seldom mentioned is the wine region in Queensland and its surprisingly high-quality wines. Maleny is one small nook of this undiscovered region.Most visitors to Maleny will know about Maleny Mountain Wines. The building shaped into a huge half-barrel on the side of the road is difficult to pass by and not get noticed or commented on. The gimmicks of the cellar door aside, this winery is squarely focuses on the Queensland wine industry by using it own grapes and others sourced from the state. Chambourcin is the grape of choice for this winery, and the wine has a deep colour and depth.Less than ten minutes from Maleny Mountain Wines, is Settlers Rise Winery at Montville. This winery doesn’t have the exposure of Maleny Mountain but it does have the wine. In fact Settlers Rise offers eight wines including two reserves; Chardonnay and Shriaz.Both these wineries benefit from the fertile ground and clean air that makes the Sunshine Coast hinterland such an oasis for winemaking. But the wines will not be the only things that impresses visitors. They can enjoy some of the high-quality wines while sitting back admiring the view over the Glass House Mountains and the beautiful Sunshine Coast.
