Life is a Bed and Breakfast.

photo of hot breakfastAs I lay here eating a delicious home-cooked breakfast that my friendly host Jan has just brought in, I can’t help but think about why I don’t do this more often. Spending a weekend in the hinterland at a cosy bed and breakfast is one of my favourite things to do, and I’ll tell you why.

There’s no feeling in the world that compares to having some quality time to yourself. It’s a guilty pleasure that we often think about but rarely break out of the daily grind to achieve. Things get in the way; work, family driving the kids to school all take a toll on the day to day, and when it comes time to take that break away from things, we put it off, fearing it’s not as important. The sad thing is, most people don’t make it a priority to do this, myself included. I’m possibly the most guilty of putting too much effort into work and not into relaxation. It reduces stress, clears the mind and prepares you for challenges that lay ahead.

The act of jumping in the car, heading up to the hills, or the beach and clearing your schedule and mind of anything else can be an extremely liberating experience and one that recharges you at work, love and life. Who would have thought toast, jam and a good cup of coffee could inspire such reflection? But, the simple truth is, no matter where you come from, what you do for a living or what you believe in, taking time out for yourself is something that is truly beneficial and rewarding.
