Hinterland Dreaming

maleny hinterlandFar from the daily commotion of the big city, Maleny and the surrounding townships of Witta, Montville, Mapleton and Flaxton provide the perfect weekend getaway for those of us caught up in the rigours of city life. With a truly diverse natural environment, spanning lush tropical rainforests, dairy farms and some of the best mountain views on offer in South East Queensland, the Sunshine Coast hinterland precinct is one of the best places to wind down and relax to the sounds of the wildlife.

Offering a myriad of accommodation options, the area is home to over 45 private Bed & Breakfast guesthouses, all ranging in price and luxury. Be sure to book early, especially in the peak holiday periods, as the demand for cabins and cottages is high. You are sure to find something to tempt you into spending an extended long weekend out in the hills, as the range of lodgings is as diverse as the environment.

The main hub of this hinterland area, Maleny, is home to approximately five thousand locals, and the town shares a unique community spirit that is rare in today’s society. A haven for artists, musicians and other cottage industries, the main street , Maple Street, is the ideal place to spend an afternoon, sipping a locally grown coffee at one of the many cafe’s, or browsing through the incredible array of local craft shops and art galleries.

The townspeople of the hinterland area in general are kind, friendly and really emit a sense of belonging to their community. There are various ‘community-based’ organisations in Maleny, with a local co-operative selling in season fruit and vegetables and a community credit union as well, providing loans and banking services to the local people.
